In just one week, all eyes will turn to the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, for the highly anticipated 2025 edition of the Tokyo Auto Salon.<\/p>\n
Now in its 43rd year, TAS has become more than just a cornerstone of the JDM tuning scene\u00a0\u2013 it\u2019s a global celebration of\u00a0car culture. We\u2019ve attended every year since Speedhunters\u2019 inception in 2008, and this time is no different, with a big team on the ground ready to bring you the best, the unexpected, and the downright outlandish. How will Tokyo Auto Salon 2025 stack up against previous shows? We\u2019ll soon find out, but in the meantime, let\u2019s wind the clock back 10 years\u00a0to revisit Dino\u2019s highlights from the 2015 event.<\/p>\n 2015 Feature<\/span><\/p>\n The general idea behind Tokyo Auto Salon is to bombard you with as much car-related goodness as possible\u00a0\u2013\u00a0something the event does very well.\u00a0It\u2019s precisely what the Tokyo Auto Salon\u00a0is all about; you wander like a kid in a candy store through hall upon hall, guided solely by the sight of\u00a0something in the distance.\u00a0You may spot a cool slammed VIP ride a few booths up, but then you are distracted by a new set of brakes that you need to take a\u00a0closer look at.<\/p>\n On Saturday and Sunday, just moving around the halls of the Makuhari Messe can become a proper chore, such is the number of people that visit TAS over the weekend. 2015 was a huge success for the annual tuning show \u2013 the halls filled with record numbers of displays and almost 310,000 visitors through the doors over the three-day event. Yep, modifying is far<\/em> from dead in Japan.<\/p>\n So, let\u2019s begin our tour at the\u00a0RAYS stand \u2013 one of the first places I always stop\u00a0off at\u00a0to see what\u2019s new for the year. It\u2019s where I spotted this Mazda Atenza sitting on new Variance V.V.10M wheels from RAYS\u2019\u00a0Versus line. The stance and show-orientated movement have forced\u00a0Japanese wheel manufacturers to push themselves to stay on top of current trends with new and\u00a0innovative wheels, and these are a\u00a0perfect example of that.<\/p>\n Sitting in front of RAYS\u2019 main display area was this new TE37 design. This 22-inch version of one of the most\u00a0iconic\u00a0Japanese aftermarket wheels is only a prototype, but as you can see, it boasts a new spoke design. If the wheel goes into production, it\u2019s going to be aimed at the SUV market, which means\u00a0it will surely\u00a0find its way onto some\u00a0big luxury sedans, too.<\/p>\n The VIP movement, well, keeps moving! There were quite a few sweet sedans to feast one\u2019s eyes on, but this old Cima from Expert stood out to me.<\/p>\n Some take things to the extreme, and wild widebody kits and intricate designs are becoming quite the norm, as this insane Crown Athlete shows.<\/p>\n The new Infiniti Q50\u00a0\u2013 or Nissan Skyline as it\u2019s called in Japan\u00a0\u2013\u00a0will no doubt become a popular base for VIP guys to go crazy on, but\u00a0its underlying sports credentials\u00a0put a nice twist on things.\u00a0That\u2019s why I thought Biltz\u2019s interpretation was spot on.<\/p>\n Blitz have even\u00a0launched their brake kits, which will soon be released in Japan.<\/p>\n This is a company that\u2019s\u00a0been trying out some new\u00a0marketing initiatives of late,\u00a0like giving out suspension upgrades to customers and asking them to pay and keep them only if they like them. It\u2019s a way to get that tuning bug to return, and it has to be commended, as people\u2019s tastes have skewed a tad lately. Blitz\u00a0also went to town\u00a0on the new Daihatsu Copen, dressing their demo machine up with a set of Enkei mesh wheels and some\u00a0R35-inspired aero treatment. Of course, being from Blitz, there are some performance mods\u00a0in the mix, too.<\/p>\n And while we\u2019re on the subject of Copens, check out this little selection! Daihatsu called in a bunch of tuners and asked them to come up with their own modified\u00a0interpretations of this new-gen kei<\/em>\u00a0machine. Once Honda hits back with the S660, it will be interesting to see if there\u2019s a\u00a0wave of new kei<\/em> sportscars like we had back in the early \u201990s. My favorite? It has\u00a0to be the HKS time attack Copen in the bottom right corner.<\/p>\n Like a few other aero specialists out there, Varis was quick to jump on the Lexus RC F now that it\u2019s been released in\u00a0Japan. Given\u00a0the time constraints,\u00a0they only managed to come up with a carbon lip spoiler, side skirts, and a rear treatment for the new\u00a0performance coupe, but I\u2019m sure\u00a0we\u2019ll see some wilder designs from Varis emerge over the coming year.<\/p>\n And talking of Varis, they had a collaborative project on display at the Bridgestone booth. Amongst several modifications, the\u00a0Toyota 86 featured Varis\u2019s widebody aero kit and was sitting on a set of Prodrive wheels, which, of course, are manufactured\u00a0by the Bridgestone group. Red on red? Do like!<\/p>\n I spent a while looking at this Subaru Levorg on HKS\u2019s\u00a0stand. It\u2019s such a pretty-looking compact wagon, and it would have had so much\u00a0potential had it not been ruined by only being available with a CVT transmission. HKS has attempted to make the most of the car by developing some adjustable dampers, a full exhaust system,\u00a0and some\u00a0electronic upgrades to extract a little more power from the 300hp\u00a0FA20 turbo motor under the hood.<\/p>\n However, it was this<\/em> that I couldn\u2019t keep\u00a0my eyes off. Yep, HKS has updated the V Cam system for the RB26 and is now even launching a Step 0 2.8L stroker kit for the same engine. Seeing a tuning powerhouse\u00a0like this going back and developing new upgrades for these old engines is so inspiring. Big thumbs up to HKS, and let\u2019s hope more performance parts makers follow suit.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve seen this thing\u00a0before at the SEMA Show, but I thought I\u2019d take a few more snaps of the one-make race car that Mazda\u00a0plans to launch once the production\u00a0model goes on sale. Hurry up, Mazda, we want to drive these cool little cars.<\/p>\n As always,\u00a0Kansai Service had its big booth right in front of Yokohama and Nissan, and in the middle\u00a0of it all was a\u00a0new-gen Impreza STI. This car is bound to be at the epicenter of the tuning scene for the foreseeable future\u00a0now that Mitsubishi is killing off the Evo.<\/p>\n Phoenix\u2019s Power, too, had their interpretation. Blue on blue? Hell yes! It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers all these shops will be able to extract from the model\u2019s\u00a02.0L turbo boxer engine.<\/p>\n Call it an evolution in tuning, but Studie \u2013 the biggest BMW specialist in Japan \u2013 is going to be developing some updates for the i8. Their demo car was already sitting on a fresh new set of BBS wheels centerstage at the Advan booth.<\/p>\n Wheels, wheels, wheels!\u00a0There are so many new wheel manufacturers popping up\u00a0every year, but it\u2019s the big names in the industry that continue to garner most of the\u00a0attention\u00a0\u2013\u00a0much like Yokohama and their cool selection of demo cars, which\u00a0included the\u00a0Destino 500 and Studie M235i.<\/p>\n And now for what\u00a0may well have been\u00a0the most exciting car of TAS this year. Looks aside, there\u2019s\u00a0little left from the Suzuki Jimny it\u2019s based on.<\/p>\n Pop on over to the other side of the wall and all is revealed. Underneath the removable body resides a tubular frame tied into\u00a0parts\u00a0of the original Jimny chassis. It\u2019s all been built to show off the various parts that Kinokuni manufactures\u00a0\u2013\u00a0like fittings and braided lines \u2013 but the coolest thing sits up front: an SR20DET. Once this fun little project\u00a0is finished it will be the freshest drift machine in Japan.<\/p>\n After years of bringing you coverage from the Tokyo Auto Salon\u00a0we can finally say that we were there too \u2013 officially. 2015 saw Speedhunters set up its very first booth at the show, which was a\u00a0very proud moment\u00a0for us.<\/p>\n We\u2019d like to extend a massive thanks to everyone that stopped by to pick up some of our merchandise or just to say hello to Larry and myself.\u00a0It was very humbling and we are truly grateful for all the support.<\/p>\n How about this for a university project?\u00a0I\u2019m sure than many people walked\u00a0right by this Prius, not realising that underneath\u00a0the body was a rear-wheel drive drag machine. But if\u00a0the big drag radials at the back didn\u2019t give the game away, what powers this thing was\u00a0certainly sure to.<\/p>\n Yep,\u00a0there isn\u2019t much hybrid\/eco stuff going on here\u2026\u00a0I really hope that the\u00a0students who built this\u00a0received top honours for their efforts.<\/p>\n We\u2019re all familiar with the wild ER34 Nissan Skyline sedan interpretations\u00a0that\u00a0Nomuken over at URAS comes up with, but this year he thought he\u2019d change things up a little and apply some fresh thinking to\u00a0the\u00a0JZX100 Toyota Mark II. I have to say, I\u2019m really liking this style.<\/p>\n 326 Power is constantly coming up with some of Japan\u2019s most groundbreaking stance cars. Maybe it\u2019s the Hiroshima style that does it \u2013 I don\u2019t quite know \u2013 but like the Lexus RC in the opening photo of this post, their cars just grab your attention instantly. Haters are going to hate I\u2019m sure \u2013 especially with the amount of onikyan<\/em> they run on most of their builds \u2013 but this is one side of JDM car culture that isn\u2019t going away any time soon.<\/p>\n It\u2019s really cool seeing more and more foreign brands entering the\u00a0Japanese market.\u00a0KW is one of them, and along with their ST line, they\u2019re offering\u00a0a full range of high performance suspension\u00a0solutions \u2013 from street\u00a0to\u00a0race.<\/p>\n And once you have the handling and looks of your car sorted, the next thing is always making it sound better.<\/p>\n Check out this\u00a0Akrapovi\u010d titanium exhaust for the F82. It\u2019s a pity you can\u2019t see it in all its beauty once it\u2019s fitted to the car.<\/p>\n After three years of\u00a0world\u00a0domination,\u00a0Miura-san at Rocket Bunny decided to take a little break\u00a0for TAS this year.\u00a0Of course, slowing down for Miura means that he only had to build a few cars for the show \u2013\u00a0one of them being a new\u00a0daily driver. It\u2019s so nice to see his NSX kit presented in such a simple way\u00a0with\u00a0no graphics\u00a0and\u00a0no sponsor stickers\u00a0\u2013\u00a0just his design and some\u00a0candy red paint to complete it all. What do you guys think?<\/p>\n Let\u2019s talk about parts for a moment. For\u00a0me, TAS has always been about the performance-making hardware, but the latest trend of aero and aesthetic mods has diluted this down a bit. That said, I always make a point of checking out what will hit the market in the coming year, and something that really made me salivate was on display at the Endless booth.<\/p>\n Endless\u00a0was the first brake manufacturer to develop and sell an aftermarket monoblock 6-pot calliper, and now\u00a0they\u2019ve followed\u00a0that up with\u00a0a carbon disc option to go along with it. Details are still thin on the ground, but this was easily one of the most exciting new products to be shown at TAS this year. Good on you, Endless!<\/p>\n Roberuta specialises in air cups to lift up the noses of expensive supercars, but as usual it was their line up of demo machinery that\u00a0grabbed everyone\u2019s attention. I doubt anyone even noticed their products on display, because I myself lost it at the F40 and don\u2019t remember much after that.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve touched on brakes and suspension, and now I want to\u00a0talk about lights. The light tuning trend appears to be far from over, with companies like Valenti continuing to grow\u00a0their catalogue with LED and complex head and taillight replacements.<\/p>\n Check out the new Do-Luck R35 taillights with a twin ring look.\u00a0The iconic afterburners redefined?<\/p>\n Car Shop Glow were also showing off some cool taillights on\u00a0their time attack FD3S RX-7.<\/p>\n And these are another set they made for Top Fuel, by far<\/em> the coolest LED lights I saw at the show. Now, will someone please step up and make something cool and modern for the R32, R33 and R34? Please, pretty please? Valenti? Anyone?<\/p>\n With a simple white theme, Lexus\u2019s booth was once again both elegant and minimalistic.\u00a0This time, however, there were headphones hanging down from the ceiling, which you could put on and\u00a0hear what the Super GT Lexus RC F racec ar sounds like. Very cool.<\/p>\n Boom Craft and 029 Motoring had the craziest and most Japanese-like\u00a0booth of them all I thought, even though every car on display was Italian. These kits were all designed by Morohoshi, the guy that has singlehandedly redefined what Lamborghini tuning culture in Japan is all about. You either like it, or you don\u2019t\u00a0\u2013\u00a0simple as that.<\/p>\n Impulse is a\u00a0shop that I\u2019ve always wanted to visit. The\u00a0way they tune and build AE86s using ample amounts of\u00a0carbon fiber\u00a0is quite unique,\u00a0and their recent launch of new\u00a0overfenders really gives the\u00a0old Hachiroku<\/em>\u00a0some\u00a0contemporary style.<\/p>\n They obviously\u00a0know what they are doing when it comes to\u00a0creating in carbon finer,\u00a0but this is just showing off! In a good way of course\u2026<\/p>\n It was bound to happen sooner or later, and M&M Racing has\u00a0finally given the Honda S2000 the works look with a set of pretty wild overfenders. The car is built for fast road driving and touge <\/em>action,\u00a0so while it sits low, it doesn\u2019t have exaggerated negative camber. An excellent execution.<\/p>\n More overfenders? Yep, this time from Obayashi Factory who took a\u00a0Nissan Leaf and did\u00a0unthinkable things to it. I like the result though, and in a strange way it actually reminds me of Toshi\u2019s RWB Rough Rhythm<\/em> 993.<\/p>\n To celebrate their 10th year anniversary, Lexon Exclusive put together this wild Lexus IS F running elegant overfenders and slammed down on a set of Work wheels. The execution, choice of color and that wild wing really did it for me.\u00a0Once this car is fully complete I\u2019ll\u00a0definitely be heading to their shop to take\u00a0a\u00a0closer look at it.<\/p>\n Now, we generally don\u2019t really show too many SUVs or off roaders on Speedhunters,\u00a0but this thing was too cool to pass up. J&L went crazy on this Defender\u00a0with\u00a0overfenders and a ton of\u00a0other custom body additions, and then\u00a0finished it off with a\u00a0fully leather-trimmed interior. It might not be performance related, but this would be such a cool truck to trailer your race car to the track with.<\/p>\n The number of imported luxury and performance cars continue to grow at\u00a0TAS every year, and in the Euro-styling realm Wald is always one of the most\u00a0talked about exhibitors.\u00a0This time around they chose to showcase the new Maserati Ghibli and their\u00a0elegant series of aesthetic additions for it. I do like the matte black finish, even if it is a little 2009.<\/p>\n Vans and SUVs are never forgotten at TAS and M\u2019z Speed had\u00a0things well covered with this large display of modified family haulers.<\/p>\n In my mind, Honda Odyssey headlights on a S13 Nissan Silvia make for one of the best facelift\u00a0conversions.\u00a0The units\u00a0fitted to this Big Run S13 were even running IPF projectors.<\/p>\n The Kyushu Danji BNR34 has changed a lot since I saw it last at Battle Evome. Its debut at the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge\u00a0in 2014 was a successful one, and their collaborative effort with Voltex has equipped the\u00a0Nissan\u00a0with some of the wildest aero additions we\u2019ve ever seen\u00a0on a san-yon!<\/em><\/p>\n Now, those<\/em> are canards! I really hope we\u2019ll see it back at Tsukuba for the remaining\u00a0two Evome rounds. Maybe\u00a0Under Suzuki will manage to fix his engine before then too.<\/p>\n Do you remember the TRD Griffon\u00a0we featured two years ago? Well, this is the result of that development program\u00a0\u2013 Toyota Racing Development\u2019s\u00a0road-going version,\u00a0which will be available to purchase in Japan from March. Those fenders really are to die for.<\/p>\n Toyota and its tuning and aftermarket brands are on fire right now.\u00a0They\u2019ve come up with some really cool cars,\u00a0one of them being the\u00a0recently released G\u2019s Mark X, which features a number of performance and styling upgrades over the standard\u00a0sedan.<\/p>\n Of course, Tokyo Auto Salon\u00a0is as much about the cars as it is about campaign models. But for\u00a0some, it\u2019s only<\/em> about the\u00a0models.<\/p>\n Hidden\u00a0behind all of the \u2018show\u2019 cars at TAS, you\u2019ll find the\u00a0smaller shops that are still out there catering to those that have that unstoppable addiction with power. TM Works is one of those places.<\/p>\n They keep pushing the envelope of engine tuning\u00a0and\u00a0making full use of what\u2019s out there. And\u00a0like I mentioned and showed you earlier, it\u2019s cool to see that there are so many parts makers supporting it all\u00a0\u2013\u00a0especially for those cars that are now classed as older, and in some cases classic machines.<\/p>\n I\u2019m pretty sure I don\u2019t need to spell it out, but KRC Japan\u00a0continues to have the most \u2018out there\u2019 kits for the FD3S. The Osaka company\u00a0designs everything from furniture\u00a0to clothes\u00a0and accessories, and now they\u2019ve even\u00a0started to customise the Toyota Prius. TAS really has something for everyone.<\/p>\n Along with the Dodge Challenger and Porsche 997 we saw in\u00a0the TAS preview post,\u00a0Liberty Walk had their usual huge booth filled up with slammed and widened supercars. Of course, it also\u00a0included\u00a0their ever-expanding line of kids cars that are given the same aesthetic treatment.<\/p>\n Do any of you\u00a0guys remember the hot version of the Suzuki Alto from back in the \u201990s? Well, it\u2019s back with a vengeance with this Turbo RS version based on the all-new car. It\u2019s only a concept right now, but Suzuki would be crazy not to make this a\u00a0reality.<\/p>\n The guys at STI have certainly been busy.\u00a0On\u00a0top of the Blitzen Legacy we saw being forklifted into the show\u00a0in my\u00a0preview post, they had Toshi Arai\u2019s brand new rally car\u00a0based off\u00a0the 2015\u00a0Impreza platform on display.<\/p>\n But the hottest machine\u00a0on their stand was without a doubt the 2015 N\u00fcrburgring 24\u00a0Hour\u00a0Race Impreza. When compared to\u00a0the cars that STI has run\u00a0at the grueling endurance race in the past (and successfully may I add),\u00a0they have really stepped their game up with this one\u00a0\u2013\u00a0especially so on the aero side of things.<\/p>\n In\u00a0addition to the big front splitter,\u00a0canards\u00a0and\u00a0underbody aero additions, the rear gets these squared-off fenders and probably the biggest wing ever employed on an Impreza.<\/p>\n All in all, I\u2019d say that 2015 is shaping up to be an exciting and interesting year in the JDM world.<\/p>\n The Speedhunters<\/strong> Dino Dalle Carbonare<\/strong>![\"TAS2015-Mishmash-01\"](\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/speedhunters-wp-production\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/16210032\/TAS2015-Mishmash-01-1200x800.jpg\"\/)
